Transatlantic
Fellowships - German Marshall Fund
Since 1999, The Forum at the Evans School
has served as a regional partner in identifying and selecting outstanding
young leaders in business, government, politics, media and the non-profit
sector for the German Marshall Fund’s Marshall Memorial Fellowship
(MMF) program. The Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) program provides
a unique opportunity for young policy and opinion leaders from 14
European countries and the United States to gain an in-depth understanding
of societies, institutions and peoples across the Atlantic. During
the 3-4 week traveling program, Fellows on both sides of the Atlantic
develop a broad knowledge of political, economic, cultural and social
issues in their host countries through meetings with city officials,
school teachers, police officers, government officials, business
leaders, labor organizers, farmers, activists, religious leaders,
academics and members of the community who open their homes to Fellows.
GMF also helps each Fellow set up a few personal appointments that
match his or her own expertise and interest.
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)
created the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program in 1982 to introduce
the next generation of Western Europe’s leaders to the United
States, its institutions, politics, and people, and to reinforce
the transatlantic relationship. Originally comprised of young leaders
in politics and the media from Germany, France, Denmark and the
Netherlands, the program has expanded over the years to include
Fellows from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy,
Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Spain. In 1999, GMF launched
an American component of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship to educate
a new generation of American leaders about Europe, the transatlantic
partnership, and global challenges that both sides face. GMF works
with regional and national partners to identify Fellows from across
the United States.
